Embedded systems design usually involves a moderate amount of hardware design and a significant amount of firmware design. After all, the whole point of embedded systems is to use programming in place of components. Our first step on any project is to make sure we fully understand the specifications for the product, fleshing out the rudimentary grasp obtained in the initial consultation. We continue to confer with the client throughout the job, obtaining approvals as necessary. Combining the specifications with our extensive experience, we create a high level design, usually documented by block diagrams and explanatory documents. We use these to validate our plans against the specifications, adjusting as necessary. Now we are ready for detailed design: circuits and firmware. Throughout the detail design phase, we employ quality enhancement techniques such as formal and informal peer reviews and rigorous application of automated design checking tools. The design is continuously tested as it is debugged and undergoes a final test before delivery to our client, complete with an outline of tests performed and documentation of test results.  Details of the design are documented as the job progresses in diagrams and explanatory texts, as appropriate, and all are included in the final deliverables package.
